The most immediate concern for many is how the appearance of our tattoos will change as our skin sags and the wrinkles grow more pronounced. These effects on our tattoos will be inevitable. But one does wonder what the process of aging might appear like. So, the question still stands: will my tattoo age over time? WE ARE SORRY MOM
I hope I get to an age where everything stretches and sags. One of the best shots you can give a tattoo at staying the same is by getting it done on one of the body parts that changes the least with age, so I talked to a couple of board-certified dermatologists about exactly that. Michael Lin , founder of Dr. Lin Skincare , told me. For instance, the buttocks and the underarms tend to see less sun exposure, but can still show sagging. Some of that sagging comes naturally with the way the body changes as it ages, and sometimes it comes from weight fluctuation—stretching with weight gain and contracting with weight loss. Lin says.
As skin ages , the number of skin cell layers remains the same, yet the outer layer of the skin — the epidermis — thins out. Visible signs of aging include wrinkles, loss of color in the skin- as the number of melanocytes our pigmented cells decrease, sagging and loose skin. Fortunately, these changes tend to occur gradually, which helps prevent rapid tattoo distortion.
